Verdeeco Named Vendor To Watch

“If you want to acheive some really big and interesting goals, you have to learn to fall in love with hard work.”         -Steve Pavlina

We have some really big and interesting goals here at Verdeeco.  And as a startup, looking to do some big things, and solve some real problems, for this industry that most of us here have devoted our entire careers to—hard work just kind of comes with the territory.

And I don’t know how many of you have ever worked in a start up before, but as you are existing on minimal sleep, maximum caffeine, whatever food can be delivered at the oddest hours (have you ever noticed how freakishly fast Jimmy John’s is?), and having, in general, a whole heck of a lot of fun, you are searching for those rays of light that pierce through the general fog and validate what you are working so hard for.  (Well, WE don’t need the validation so much, but it sure is nice to take home to our families…to prove that most of those hours away from them really have been spent working…)

So, it is really nice to be able to get in front of leading utilities in our market, present them with our vision and our solution, and get to spend three days in discussions with them around the growing problem of big data within the utility space and the extreme potential of analytics for efficiencies and bottom-line savings locked inside that data. Those conversations were like rocket fuel to us.  Seriously, who needs caffeine after that? But to then be voted by those utilities as the up and coming Vendor To Watch just really blew us away.

So thank you to all the utilities at the recent Rural Smart Grid Summit for your vote of confidence in us!  Just so you know, we took about five minutes to high-five, fist bump, and polish the pretty award, but now it’s back to work.  Hardly.  I mean now it’s back to hard work.

Sorry it so hard to concentrate with all those little rays of light.  Hey…did someone hang a disco ball in here???

JAVA PROGRAMMER NEEDED TO DISRUPT THE FUTURE OF THE SMART GRID

SMART GRID + BIG DATA = CLOUD COMPUTING

We are looking for a Software Engineer to be an integral part of our team and join in on our journey to completely disrupt the exciting smart grid industry. Our robust SaaS system constitutes a wide range of open-source software designed for high volume and rapid growth. The ONE must be a self-starter, problem solver and team player. This team player will be responsible for quickly developing interactive web applications, participate in the design and coding of end-to-end applications including database models, application logic, and presentation layers. But we are looking for an innovator with an entrepreneurial touch, looking to blow it out of the park, willing to disrupt, who is able to adapt the right technologies necessary to solve business problems.

We are looking for high energy individuals with entrepreneurial spirit. If you are looking for a place where you can be integral to a building a team, a culture, a company, an industry…then let us introduce ourselves.

We’re Verdeeco. That’s (ver • DEE• co). And we are doing some pretty exciting things. Actually, we’re pretty exciting ourselves. We are an Atlanta-based smart grid startup who has been rated as one of the hottest startup companies to watch for 2011 by the Smart Grid News. We’re pretty excited about all that, but we’re more excited about what we’re doing.

The smart grid is basically taking the “dumb” electric grid and adding communication, monitoring, analysis, and control to attempt to predict and intelligently respond to the behavior and actions of electric consumers. But these devices that go onto the grid produce data. BIG DATA. Big data that the current back end systems used in the industry are not equipped to handle. The industry recognizes the data problem, and sees the need for advanced analytics, but hasn’t been able to produce a solution.

That’s where we come in. We provide a cloud-based data storage and analytics platform with a SaaS application offering to the industry. In addition to the storage of petabytes of data, our solutions use a novel metrology to query, mine, and store results in cache for fast access. Not only are our data analytics solutions based on heuristics and predictive analytics algorithms, they also incorporate machine learning to further make our applications learn and better their predictions for the next time around. We are building this technology from the ground up and are looking for someone who has what it takes to make an impact in this environment.

Responsibilities:
• Design, Develop, and Implement Java based SaaS solutions to enterprise-level scalability, performance, and availability in the cloud. Use existing processes and toolset and to focus on short term product release targets. Develop high-performance applications for large-scale data management and analytics.

• Working knowledge of O-R mapping tools like Hibernate
• Working knowledge of memcached or other similar technology a plus
• Working knowledge of any App Server such as Tomcat/Jetty
• Working knowledge of any open source database like MySQL, PostgreSQL is required.
• Working knowledge of any NOSQL, Hadoop, Cassandra or other big data solutions is preferred.
• Experience with git version control is a plus
• Prior working knowledge with Eclipse IDE is a must, unless suitable alternative experience exists
• Should be able to work independently, self-motivated and be able to proactively resolve issues
• Excellent communication (written and oral). Must be an independent worker, confident and logical in their approach to life
• Should be able to work independently, self-motivated and be able to proactively resolve issues
• Must strive for beautiful code.
• Must be a team player and willing to work with minimal requirements and direction. This is an ABSOLUTE must.

Let us warn you now; this job is not for just anyone. In fact, if you are just looking for a job—or a paycheck to cash, or a checklist of tasks to tick off, or anything even close to just punching a time card—forget you ever saw this! This is not for the faint of heart. We work in an agile environment, requirements change (we do 2 week SPRINTs), and like any other start-up, the delivery dates are aggressive. But we guarantee one thing - you’ll have a lot of fun.

Smart Grid Startup Verdeeco Takes Aim at Big Data

Verdeeco, an Atlanta-based smart grid data analytics startup, today announced that it has closed $800 thousand in Series A funding to facilitate the growth and adoption of its cloud-based utility data solution. The investment, led by the Atlanta Technology Angels (ATA), included the Auburn Angel Network, based in Auburn, Alabama, and the Upper Carolina Angel Network, based in Greenville, South Carolina.

Verdeeco’s platform, which combines meter data with other utility data types like transformer stability, sub-station performance, transmission, SCADA, distribution automation and third party data like weather, applies big data technologies employed by players like Google, Facebook, and Twitter to the smart grid space.

The Verdeeco solution allows utilities to pick and choose from a host of applications, and apply them to all, or a subset, of their network devices, including meters, transformers, and substations, all while only paying for what they use.
